stop lovingly handcrafting all our code
I guess they’re headquartered in Switzerland, but have American values. It’s a shame, because having privacy engineered like a Swiss watch makes a lot of sense.

I must be off my game today. A headline started with “Sam Altman Says” and I accidentally read the whole headline.

I use the Orion browser on iOS with uBlock Origin and the when I go to one subreddit I still lurk, it locks the whole browser telling me to use the mobile app such that I can’t scroll to kill the tab and have to close the whole browser. If I want it to work, I end up having to begrudgingly use Brave.

I can’t think of a better word to describe this guy than the Irish word, gobshite.

Yeah, if I end up switching providers, I’m bringing my own domain next time so at least my email addresses can stay the same.

Reminds me of shitty Windows 8 laptops back in the day. I don’t want to touch the screen—it has a keyboard and a trackpad.

Sure, “physical media” that contains no game. Let me know when there’s a working Switch 2 emulator, because I’m done buying expensive computers where only a big corporation has root access.
The tech bros are pushing the “AI dangerous” narrative because it not only hypes the tech, but allows them to position themselves as the “safe option” compared to competing open models that they’d like to see kneecapped with regulation.
In reality, tech bros and corrupt governments are the reason why AI is dangerous because they’re using it to build a digital cage to spy on the populace and control the flow of information.
This is the classic Problem-Reaction-Solution technique.

I took the video as amplifying the “AI dangerous” narrative that companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are trying to push, seemingly to position themselves as the “safe option” compared to competing open models that they’d Iike to see kneecapped with regulation. Near the end of the video, they do mention that some people see this as AI company marketing, but don’t explain why “AI dangerous” is a beneficial narrative for these companies.
The video also admits that it is based on OpenAI’s account, which means they are basically taking “Sam Altman says” as a reliable source. How about we see the code for the agents in this test? What was the system prompt? Did they just magically collaborate, or were they instructed to do so? Also, isn’t it strange that a couple weeks after Huggingface got hacked, the Nvidia acquisition was announced.
There are a lot of financial incentives in play here, and I stopped trusting Kurzgesagt after the Gates Foundation funding controversy. I wonder, for example, did OpenAI or another member of the AI circle jerk fund this video?
From reading the comments on that video, it seems the average viewer is coming away accepting the “AI dangerous” narrative, so paid or not, this video works in the favor of the tech bros.

Kurzgesagt’s recent video about the incident isn’t much better.

LLMs have only gotten to a few trillion parameters, whereas a human brain has 100 trillion synapses. They’ll catch up to humans soon enough if only the tech bros can get a trillion dollars for each trillion params.

What games will be billed at an hourly rate that are worth playing that won’t be on Steam or the high seas? Console exclusives that will be available to emulate at some point?

In theory, a SaaS offering should have economies of scale and should be cheaper than self-hosting, especially if you put a monetary value on the time you spend maintaining your own server(s). However, number must go up, so this may not be the case.
There are a few other factors that may come into play that make self-hosting the more economically favorable option:

If I’m paying that much for a device, I damned well better have root access. I’m done buying machines that big corpos control.

That’s fair. I’m a fan of open weight models, but the fact that they’re not open source and are instead akin to a compiled binary means there could be something nefarious hidden within. Best policy is to use proper guardrails with any LLM and don’t blindly trust it.
