I usually look at “Local” or “All”, but that’s still only what is published on or is federated by my instance. What effective ways of discovering new content across all of the Fediverse do you know?

Every Lemmy instance has a built-in search tool that can be used to search across instances (make sure the slider at the top is set to “All”, it usually defaults to “Local”). Browsing All for a while will show you a decent cross-section of the most active communities (just make sure to tighten your filters). And there are some 3rd party search tools like https://lemmyverse.net/ that do periodic trawls of posts and traffic.

    • View by “all”, subscribe to communities you’re interested in and block the ones you don’t want to see. Fediverse is still small enough that it’s relatively easy to sort through.
    • Use the search bar to look for specific keywords for topics that interest you. Depending on your interface, you probably have some version of an “explore communities” page where you can see what’s popular.
    • Sometimes I’ll find communities by seeing what other users with similar interests interact with on their profiles.

There’s a community called “Lemmy411” where the purpose is to help people find a comm for a specific topic. If you have something you’re interested in, you can ask for recommendations there.

For me personally, sometimes people will just link various communities, and if it seems interesting and active I’ll subscribe. Tbh, I mainly used the same method back when I used Reddit

A whole community dedicated to finding the right community! I like how meaningful content selection is on the Fediverse. Thanks!

I’ve found that there hasn’t been much point in subscribing. Communities are so small that most have one post every couple of weeks or even months (outside of a few core popular communities). It has always been more worthwhile going to c/all and filter through what you see.

I have subs but I never bother with them and browse ‘All’. If there’s anything I don’t want to keep seeing I just filter out that community.

If I recall theres another service that uses something similar? Regardless its how I found a ton of cool stuff. And you don’t need a piefed account to look.
