Roughly, “murder and arson earn a gold belt; doing good deeds (lit. building bridges and repairing roads) leaves no corpse (i.e. no one can find your body to bury properly).
As a kid I got the idea of job hopping, switching companies every few years for more money. My dad said, ‘if you try to climb too fast you’ll break your neck’.
Turns out… No, the most successful people are absolutely the ones who are so completely full of shit and talk from both sides of their mouth and do what they condemn for everyone else with great gusto.
I’ve been in IT for many years. At least when markets are not like they are right now, moving to another job was absolutely the way to get market wages.
Being the “nice guy” and sticking around for “loyalty to the company” (lol) just fucks over the worker. It’s not unethical to vote with your feet.
I’ve been in situations where people try to manipulate good people into thinking that it is.
My problem is also that I am autistic and have a plethora of other issues. My greatest problem was always in finding decent work. Right now I have a job that is very good and pays well and I consider it my first ever ‘real’ job. I got it at 40. So that’s how long it took me to do it.
The guys who job hop right after college and are directors by their late 30s are not something I can imitate, sadly. Not out of lack of trying. It is just that fucking hard for me.
I never angled for management per se in these jumps; often it was doing only slightly different work (mostly just swapping the emphasis on different tools/languages/operations systems, etc.) but just getting gouged because market rates went up or how I came in with a lowballed salary because of coming in with no experience or after a layoff…
Sorry to hear about your struggles. Yeah, work is a place that is rarely accommodating of, well, anything, least of all people that are not cut from a certain mold.
Be me. Try to do the right thing. Do what society tells me. Work hard. Get hit in the face by the rock of life and am stumbling hard.
Be them. Worst of the worst, crimes against absolutely everyone and everything. Reach the pinnacle of success.
I really think the Germans need to come up with a new word for the contrast I’ve stated.
No single words, and nothing that seems too interesting in German, but there’s a good Cantonese phrase that encompasses that sentiment:
Roughly, “murder and arson earn a gold belt; doing good deeds (lit. building bridges and repairing roads) leaves no corpse (i.e. no one can find your body to bury properly).
Love it.
And yet society is built by the people who make and repair roads and bridges.
The gold belt I assume is a phrase for wealth and power.

We already have a good one in English: capitalism.
