I got visited by Jehovas Witnesses. I had just learned enough about their playbook and how to deal with it (I wrote a paper about this topic just a few days before that). When they left (fled), the woman witness was crying.
OP has a point, if a cult shows up at your door selling their beliefs, you can take the opportunity to do some deprogramming. A few of the basics:
The point is to show that dispite being antithetical to their beliefs and not interested (your friendly neightborhood atheist) your not out to villify their group. They are trying to show the younger person that the world is out to get them, by doing the opposite, you break the illusion a little bit and are likely never going to see them again as they will not want to revisit the house talking about Kierkegaard.
I’ve a professional interest in cults would you mind elaborating?
I was able to counter their arguments with rather blunt force, and had to show them some parts in the bible they had never seen before. But don’t ask me about details - that was over 40 years ago…
Nice work!
Please elaborate
I knew the key arguments they typically used, and had some counters from that. Having actually read the bible helped pointing some passages in the book to them that they probably never heard from in their church.
But that was in school, 40 years ago, the paper I had written that made me collect the knowledge was a typical school paper. Written, graded, forgotten about.
Do you have a link to this paper, by any chance?
That was a school paper. Never published, only reviewed and graded by my catholic RE teacher and thrown out with the school stuff 40 years ago.
I have a really simple question about your pronouns and I swear I’m not trying to be rude, but why do you prefer she/them instead of she/her or they/them?
People usually write it that way to tell, that they are okay with both they/them and she/her.
Thank you.
You realize OP said “Jehovah’s Witnesses”, meaning more than 1, right?
PlantDadManGuy’s comment was not referencing the Jehovah’s Witness comment at all. The pronouns comment was directed to user Ginny about the they/she pronouns listed in the username.
