Lemmy is an open source software running on different servers (instances, or websites as you may experience them) and administered by different people.
It is not developed or operated for profit. If the developers decided to pivot to extracting money from it (lol, lmao even) people could just fork and keep the older versions going.
Each instance can be run however the admin desires, which is why you will see people calling certain mods or admin authoritarian or power tripping. Unlike reddit, where there may be expectation that moderation activity is in line with reddit policy, each instance will have their own style.
Edit: introduces an analogy and forgets to use it 😶🌫️
It was actually pretty trash so I’m just going to leave it out lol
In the core of enshittification is that there’s a company behind a platform, and the company goes public and starts to chase eternal revenue growth. Eventually it will need to start finding growth at the expense of the users, say, from increasing ads, selling user data and other means that makes life terrible for users.
There’s no lemmy corporation, just individuals running their instances. So yep, enshittification (in it’s currently understood form at least) is not possible.
Please excuse the messy analogy:

Impossible that it becomes shittified? Yes.
