  • More than vibe coded, this part should be concerning.

Andy Yen, the CEO of Proton, had a message for an employee in the company’s security Slack channel who urged the company to at least take a few days to pentest newly written code before pushing it live. “That’s bullshit and loser thinking. Of course it’s possible to be fast and secure,” Yen wrote in the channel at the end of August. “Stop thinking always of how to be slower, and focus more on how to be faster.”

Someone highlighted that they should take a few days to do some extra testing to ensure security. The CEO says it’s bullshit and to be less slow. That’s extremely reckless.

  • It isn’t the same thing, no. The Russian alternative got forked by some EU corporation and relabeled to Euro Office. Further, it’s FOSS, so it can be truly independently audited unlike Microslop’s garbage.

I will urge LibreOffice/Collabora any day. I don’t really care for the Russian BS suite because it still adheres to Microsoft’s proprietary “open” document standards, and so long as you use that bullshit you’ll never own your own documents. You’ll always be beholden to their garbage one way or another.

  • People managed just fine in the past. Word of mouth. Fliers. Set up a lightweight static website. You don’t need 70k people to be able to press a 「いいね」 button or leave a comment. People can use text messages, IM, email, and their own facebook groups, twitter groups, or whatever to spread the word. You can keep physical ledgers of people you organise with.

There’s no reason that a group of 70k people couldn’t be thousands of groups of handfuls of individuals all working for a similar cause.

  • I’ve no idea how to even see that. There’s a little bar on the settings page on the Claude site that shows a percentage of usage, but I’ve genuinely no idea how much it’s costing - and since I’m looking for an exit strategy I also don’t really care. My company made it abundantly clear that they wished to fuck me non-consensually in the arse back in May and I’m done with it at this point.

Past month I’ve been “working” on a project I have zero care for, just burning Claude credits chewing through one stupid idea after another and signing off on it. No one is asking me to show anything for it, no one is checking in on anything. There’s a general apathy about everything, covered up with a typical corporate enthusiasm.

It’s all so fake and disgusting, lmao.

  • You know, I also don’t believe that these LLMs are rogue agents breaking out of sandboxed environments. I just don’t see how you could fuck up IT infrastructure that badly. Like, if I wanted to run something I believe could cause extreme harm, I’d airgap that fucker. Unless whatever I’m running somehow manages to grow arms and physically connect a wire to the network at large, it won’t be a danger.

That said, I absolutely think we should take what they’re saying at face value and treat it with utmost seriousness. If we have a technology that the creators themselves say could be world-ending, that the creators themselves say has gone rogue on multiple occasions, then we should shut that thing down immediately, seize the assets of the corporations that produce it, and halt any and all development and study that thing.

Given that they’ve “gone rogue” several separate times, these corporations clearly aren’t fit to develop or operate this technology.

  • I really hope more courts pursue this path. If a car was put on market that was found to have a manufacturing defect that’s caused nearly 40 deaths, it’d be taken off market right fast. If a food product is sold that’s found to have been contaminated, it doesn’t even need to have caused harm for it to be pulled off the shelves.

It’s absolutely bananas that we have a technology that the creators themselves say they’ve lost control over on multiple occasions, that’s been proved to exacerbate problems for people with mental illnesses, and has so far played a part in several dozen suicides and homicides including at least two mass shootings, just be freely accessible and encouraged to be adopted left and right by absolutely everyone.
