Yeah, I get that, but still… even if it fails there’s nothing stopping us from trying again in a couple more years. It’s not like it’s legal precedent where they can argue in court as to why they shouldn’t have to pay their fair share of taxes.

It’s baffling to me how much billionaires here in California are willing to spend to avoid a one time wealth tax. Like, they’re almost spending as much money on ads against prop 40 as they would have paid in the wealth tax itself.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump says he'll become 'Mr Veto' if midterm elections don't go his wayEnglish
1·16 hours agoJudging by how he behaved in 2018 the last time he lost control of congress, he’ll happily spend the rest of his term golfing.
He doesn’t actually give a shit about being president, he just desperately wants to be on TV all the time.

11·10 hours agoVeto away, Krasnov. By all means, please make Republicans look like incompetent fools for the next 2 years so we can sweep in 2028 too. After that, maybe finally we can get some shit done and prosecute the fascists (if the corporate masters are willing to indulge us, of course).

politics @lemmy.world•The US founders made a grave error in granting presidents pardon powerEnglish
28·1 day agoThe founders never would have imagined something like Unitary Executive Theory would ever take off, as they assumed that each branch would be too selfish to willingly diminish their own power by handing it over to another branch.

Yeah, she seemed slippery as fuck. This behavior isn’t surprising.
Honestly, the people hacking the illegal gambling website and the fake money website are modern day Robin Hood figures in my eyes.
Better them than hackers stealing from AARP or GoFundMe or something.

Technology@lemmy.world•Reddit is becoming "a logged-in-only experience"English
8·4 days agoThat’s kind of why I like Lemmy better. Rarely do I see reposted content. At one point I had a spreadsheet where I would log how many times I saw the exact same post on TIL or YSK.
Smaller communities are better.

93·4 days agoI guess I kind of understand why companies want you to be logged in to engage with their platform, as the user metrics are the main selling point to advertisers, but man do I really fucking hate it when a platform forces me to log in by preventing me from using their website. So much so, that I haven’t made an account on Instagram or X or Facebook or whatever dumb social media platform specifically because I can’t browse without signing up. Well, that, and also the greed, the lack of privacy, the tacit endorsement of fascism, et. cetera.
No, I don’t want to make an account.
No, I don’t want to download your app.
No, I don’t want to turn on notifications.
Gah, fuck off with all this horseshit. The internet used to be fun. Now everything is a chore and nobody does anything unless they feel like they can make a profit off of it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Trump officials asked CISA to secretly hack a voting machine — and not disclose any vulnerabilities they foundEnglish
2·11 days agoYeah, I wouldn’t put it past him to cheat since he was caught cheating before, but I do believe the reason the Trump admin asked to keep any vulnerabilities under wraps is not so they could exploit them, but so they could delay the announcement of finding them after the results came in and invalidate the results if they ended up losing.

Same answer as to why the Raiders and the Athletics left Oakland to build new stadiums in Vegas while the Red Sox still play in a stadium that is over a century old.
The team owners, by and large, care more about money than they do about the fans of the team, and flashy new stadiums get butts in seats at premium prices, even if the team itself sucks ass.
