Technology@lemmy.world•Retro Gaming Has a Port-Slop ProblemEnglish
23·5 days agoYeah and that is important: You might prefere that. But there are also people who do not speak or read English or other foreign languages and whose mother tongue is kind of obscure with not that many native speakers. For them this book they want to read is not available in a human-translated version. Machine translation gives them the ability to access the book. Nothing to complain about here.
In this case: There seem to be not that many people around with the skills and the interest to do those ports manually. So the deal here is “AI version” vs. “Nothing”. You are free to chose “nothing”, but I really do not understand why you would complain here.

Technology@lemmy.world•Retro Gaming Has a Port-Slop ProblemEnglish
149·6 days agoPeople like to hate on everything AI, but where is the problem here? You are getting ports of games. Which is awesome. The project might be abandoned by the dev sometime in the future, but that is also happening with every other hobby project out there. And those ports are also not taking that many tokens to produce, so even the energy consumption argument is not really working here. Someone going on a ski trip will produce much, much more CO2 than someone creating a port from home.

Technology@lemmy.world•How Block Blast harvests its players for ad moneyEnglish
17·7 days agoThere are gambling companies who are using all this surveillance ad tech and AI to retarget gambling addicts who are trying to quit. This will also apply to other addictions. So if you are trying to quit drinking, you will still be in the “interested in alcohol” segmentation and will get a lot of ads and coupons for alcohol. Struggling with your weight? If those ad companies are noticing that and they will, you will get ads for sweets and ads shaming you for being fat trying to sell you quack medicine.

51·11 days agoSo AAA gaming is basically dead, right? There might be a few gamers with current systems that they bought before all of this and some rich guys, but the majority will not pay those sums to play games. And that means that it will be economically insane to target a small group of gamers with a multimillion dollar budget

82·13 days agoKind of crazy for a company like Valve to have such low-hanging fruits around. They are printing money and should have the ressources to put some manpower into improving important things like the startup time of their shop.

Technology@lemmy.world•Withings now charges $100 per year to sync your data to other apps(including Apple Health and Google Health Connect)English
1·13 days agoYeah, there is something missing here. We need devices that work locally and we need a free health data aggregator. But it does look like the big platforms really want to prevent this: Garmin has limited or maybe killed their API for FOSS devs. Strava wants a subscription. Withings, too. They all do not want you to take your data.

3·18 days agoYeah - there really is the potential for a dystopian future here. People losing their jobs and livelyhood. Robots and AI replacing nearly everything. Everything gets tracked and surveilled. Cameras with facial regoconition everywhere. The police using those ground-drones from the Ukraine war to squash every protest.

32·23 days agoI think that you can reasonably defend yourself against those allegations. Even if Anthropic trained on some leaked Photoshop code, in most jurisdictions that should not matter. Software patents will, however, totally be an issue beause Adobe will have some patent on stupid features and send their lawyers

14·23 days agoYou know, Steve Jobs invented and programmed the Mac, the iPhone, did everything for the iPad himself, programmed MacOS and created iTunes by himself. Elon Musk developed several rockets, multiple cars, his own AI and is an expert in building tunnels and hyperloops - according to people on the internet.

Technology@lemmy.world•“Software is over”: Bold AI developer takes aim at Adobe with open source clonesEnglish
24·23 days agoYes, totally. First of all, that is not something your average guy from the street can do. Yes, the AI is doing some hard lifting here, but you need to have the idea, the motivation and the stamina to do something like that.
And let’s be honest: I would also be impressed by a guy hiring some software devs to build a FOSS photoshop clone in record speed.

Technology@lemmy.world•“Software is over”: Bold AI developer takes aim at Adobe with open source clonesEnglish
23·23 days agoI’ve tried his photoshop clone and it really is impressive. Yes, it needs more work. Yes, there are rough edges. But for something that one (!) guy build in a few weeks while also building several other programs? Holy crap, that is awesome and also a little bit scary. That really is a usable copy of photoshop.

Yeah - every method to prevent low quality clones would be devastating for games that are cloning the original on a high level or are massively improving on the formula. And the only way to prevent clones at all would be software patents for game mechanics and we really do not want that.
