The unacknowledged competition so many people express when walking with other people. I fucking hate that. If you want to walk with me walk with me and don’t be a dick when I’m a bit slower. You can control your speed, you just don’t want to, or don’t respect me enough to do so. Fine, go on ahead, and I’ll go home.

politics @lemmy.world•I’m a professor in Alabama. We’ve been banned from saying “Gulf of Mexico.” No, seriously!
13·18 hours agoYour students can say it. Have them say it in chorus whenever it comes up. “Gulf of…” “Mexico!”
Between colleagues? Fuck that law.
In writing, I suppose you’re stuck with it.
I’m past 60 now, and still no HL3! Can they do something about that?!

politics @lemmy.world•Democrats Need to Talk About Supreme Court Expansion Now
6·1 day agoIf term limits are good for the President, why not Congress. Or, should we eliminate term limits for the President?
I disagree. Newly elected folks who aren’t career politicians are far less corrupt than those who’ve been in office for decades and who have established relationships with the filthy rich.
Power doesn’t initially exclusively attract people who want to abuse it, the corruption comes over time. Power corrupts, but not immediately.

31·1 day agoAge isn’t the problem, corruption is. Politicians who have been in office longer are more corrupt, age is just a by product.

51·2 days agoUntil we’re consistently electing a super majority of DSA candidates, we’re too far right.
The so-called “blue wave” was little more than a lapping at the shore. It’s been branded as such by the right to make us think we won something, so we’ll relax. Hell, it was one election, it’s not even a trend yet.
We need to fight the perception that Rs support lower taxes and business development for jobs. That’s bullshit, but so many “moderate” Rs hang their hats on that. What the greedy fucks want is lower taxes, and they try to sell it with the promise of jobs. So, our neighbors, who look no farther than their paycheck stub and see the taxes push, scream, and cry to persuade people around them to vote for Rs.
That has never worked out in the long run, as we’re witnessing now. It’s very clear they don’t give a fuck about us as workers or people. They care only about themselves and their profits. They’re clamoring to replace us with machines and computers, and wetting themselves over the false promise of owning AI machines, rather than employing difficult to manage people.

11·2 days agoI did a ten month stint in a call center to make ends meet once. I had to quickly and unexpectedly learn this. And, occasionally put up with the, I’m guessing, old vets who insisted on rattling it as fast as possible when reading off serial numbers, etc. And, WOULD NOT slow down to accommodate me at all. So, I’d just ask them to repeat it sometimes four or five times, until I got it.

As some who has barely ever drank, never smoked anything and never used any other recreational drug, I find I know a lot about drug use, simply through osmosis (roommates, GFs, co-workers), reading, movies, etc. Or, at least more than I would expect.

Personally, I use metric for 3D printing, and I use imperial for wood working. Until standardized material sizes change, it doesn’t make sense to use metric for wood working. That change needs to come from the top, from government regulation.

Generally, the longer they’ve been in office, the more likely they’re corrupt. And, as a side effect, they’re older.
Age correlates with corruption, but does not cause it. Money is power and power corrupts.
Term limits would help mitigate corruption. It’s why we have term limits for the President, and we should have the same for Congress.
