  • No, it’s not transmitted on TCP/IP packets, but the way opencode works makes it so it can be part of the pinning data. Along with probably a hashed version of the context attached to the project and other things. I have read a bit about it and vibe coded some workarounds and it’s not as simple as them cataloging the VPN exit nodes, because then none of them would ever work. I have like a “scramble” command on my setup now to get around it. This was all implemented by them sometime in the last month.

Before I added the scrambling switching between VPN nodes after the october limit pinning would immediately associate you with the old limit when switching between VPN nodes, and after scrambling the MAC address and other things (nuking project metadata) it picks up a new limit again. I’m not 100% sure what specific pieces of metadata they’re using for pinning because I decided to just have the sandbox code scramble them all at the same time, but they are pinning now.

The easier fix would be for them to just require an account, and I suspect eventually they’ll do that (I suspect they like the anonymous for demos, but that’ll only last so long). I also suspect that google AI mode will eventually get the same treatment (account requirements and usage limits) because I find it very difficult to believe someone hasn’t already Jerry-rigged up a coding harness attached to Google’s free AI mode.

  • I was extremely AI hesitant, but recently I was just like fuck it, I’ll use these tools.

I went on Google AI mode multiple times and I noticed:

    1. As long as you aren’t generating images, you can basically do free tokens forever on it.
    2. It has no ads.
    3. It’s better at finding relevant information than search is.

I found a set of peripherals with it that actually matched my preferences and were not listed on the slop ratings sites. Then I bought it without a hope of Google seeing a red cent from the transaction.

All of this is to say that…they torched their actual business with revenue to give away a largely ad-free thing that’s a money furnace and has such negative public sentiment that it probably gets zero traffic except people that are hooking it up to opencode to get free tokens.

It seriously doesn’t even require you to login. Everything about it is so fucking stupid from a business angle.

  • I think it’s because LLMs in single shot scenarios are always liars, fabulists, or both.

The only reason (and only way) it works with coding is because you can hook it up to tools to run static analysis on its bullshit and it can guess enough derivatives in a loop to eventually build something that kinda sorta works.

This doesn’t apply for many fields outside of writing software. There just aren’t many fields where it applies to have a machine produce permutations and then automatically run validation on the result.

Imagine if you put it in charge of manufacturing or something, you’d have so much wasted raw material before you got to an acceptable result that you’d go out of business.

  • Part of cyberpunk is that the gilded corporations in the sky have white labs and clean computers, but the other part is that street people find their own uses for the leftover hunks of technology considered to be not pretty enough for sale.

In less convoluted terms, nobody fucking needs cloud computing. We used to write software on things that were half as powerful just a decade ago, and software capabilities have stagnated even as computing power has increased because the focus is more on stupid corporate bullshit than…you know? actually solving problems?

The phone you have in your pocket (or even posted this post on) is likely more powerful than anything that was even available 10 or 15 years ago. The joke computers that they’ll sell you right now for $200 with an adware-ridden crap OS like Chromebooks are capable of running and even building better software than anything that was available during the first software boom in the late 90s (they just might need a good wiping first).

I am much more interested in the part of cyberpunk we haven’t seen much of…where people take down Flock cameras and make them into free wifi repeaters or other types of servers and hobbyists take over again. Corporate software sucks nuts.
