It didn’t take that long to find, I wish people would link primary sources more often.

6·19 days agoThat one is on Apple. Not because they pushed touchscreens as luxurious, but because Apple was generally seen as a luxury brand when people were first switching from phones with buttons to iPhones. The rest is just the general market reaction to a fad, in this case the ultra minimalist fad that also came from Apple.

Technology@lemmy.world•Tech Workers Have Long Resisted Unions. Will AI and Politics Change the Equation? | KQEDEnglish
16·22 days agoNone of the tech workers I know have been resistant to the idea of unions and neither am I. I would say it’s the exact opposite actually, like there is always some reason I can’t join whatever union or that we can’t form a new one for tech workers. So you end up with this tiny group of devs in the CWA, and this other tiny group in the UAW, and a bunch more who work at a place that has a contract with the IBEW but they can’t join that and on and on and that’s before we even get started on the number of people who are now considered contractors and can’t join whatever union anyway.

Technology@lemmy.world•Intel to release new CPUs on old socket in early 2027 says Gigabyte - memory crisis making DDR4 desirable againEnglish
5·22 days agoI think a really good ‘for instance’ of what we are talking about is the Pentium Overdrive released in the early-mid 90s. It was a Pentium class processor designed to fit the 486 (previous generation, also where the Pent part of Pentium came from) socket. They have never not been able to backport new instruction sets they just don’t and now we have even more evidence of that.

191·24 days agoThat only makes sense if money is made on the output. What you’re basically saying is X Toy Company will make more money if they make more toys. What you’re forgetting is that there has to be a demand for those toys. So X Toy Company can’t replace workers with AI unless there’s more demand for the toys than there is currently able to be fulfilled and there’s no evidence for that across all sectors of the economy.

Technology@lemmy.world•The people holding up the internetEnglish
5·25 days agoThat would be the Internet. POTS was replaced a long time ago, pretty much all cell towers use a fiber backhaul now.
Just so we are clear the dot com crash was a result of over commercialization and venture capitalization of the World Wide Web (hence “dot com” crash and not Newsgroup crash). The Internet was nearly 30 years old at that point. What became AOL went online in 1985, 8 years before commercial interests were allowed on the WWW, just as one for instance.
Yep, that’s the entire purpose of middle management. Making sure the c-suite doesn’t have to interact with the plebes.
