Holy shit, I missed that.
The Altman family has said Annie Altman has mental health challenges
Yeah, being sexually abused by family members tends to produce mental health challenges, what the fuck.
As He died to make men holy
Let us die to make things cheap
Holy shit, I missed that.

Switching away from MS Office dependency before switching away from Windows indeed makes sense.

And self hosting, no less. Pretty sweet. Welcome!

Yeah, Jobs didn’t kid himself to think he had the skills, he only fooled his cult. And he was great salesman, so it’s not a perfect comparison.

I was thinking of Woz.
It’s impossible to argue that Jobs didn’t have a sharp eye for marketing, but most of the brilliance Apple got famous for was other people’s work paired with Jobs’ marketing. And Jobs was a complete fucking weirdo, from abusing his employees to dying because he refused to accept other forms of cancer treatment than eating fucking fruit.

I’m not at all surprised by a lot of men in tech coming out as insufferable insecure weird little guys, but what I continue to be amazed by is how many of them seem to not understand how technology works at all. It seems every tech company is another Apple, run by some freak who got lucky and found a talented tech guy whose work they could exploit.

It’s the only meme I have ever truly loved.

I have a similar story, except that I didn’t go back to my old gmail account after ditching Proton. Instead I bought myself a domain and went for a web hosting service.
I recommend getting your own domain as it means you can change email providers without and big issue down the road. I picked a stupid host at first, and changed to Hetzner later. No inconvenience at all, and even keeping my inbox was easy.

Georgia Meloni represents Fratelli d’Italia, the successor party of the Alleanza Nazionale, which in turn is the successor of the Movimento Sociale Italiano, which was Mussolini’s party. The succession is direct enough that Fratelli d’Italia still uses the same logo as MSI; a tricolor flame.
See if you can spot the similarity:

If anything I was being generous to Georgia Meloni by referring to her party as post-fascist rather than straight out fascist. There is a clear continuation here. This is not a matter of opinion.
As for the Social Democrats in Denmark being xenophobic, there’s ample evidence. The fact that they would introduce ghetto laws to get rid of immigrant neighbourhoods - and even call them ghetto laws themselves - is one interesting high-profile example.

It seems they tried to ditch Microsoft Office but to keep docx. What they need to do is to ditch docx first and start using open document format, then let the software follow.
I don’t think that’s very likely as nobody seem to understand what file formats are or why they matter. So the second best option is probably to wait for Euro-Office to hopefully take off, and then hopefully Euro-Office can change default to ODT at some point in the future and we can finally get rid of docx once and for all.

There was no real change of power, Denmark is still ruled by their xenophobic self-declared social democrats busy teaming up with Italian post-fascists to undermine international rule of law. While there is little meaningful difference between Mette Fredriksen and Georgia Meloni she’s pretty much as left as Danish politics goes, the only parties left of this mess (the Ø and Å lists, not kidding) are marginal and have never had real power.
Traditionally Denmark has had no political line for themselves, and have followed America completely. They are completely new to trying to think original thoughts in terms of foreign policy, and we should expect to see them stumble a bit. I guess it’s refreshing to see them pretend to try.

I’m largely staying out of the stock market, and what I invest I have invested in renewable energy. Most of my savings are in a high interest bank account. Once the economy collapses I plan on investing the money in (green) investment funds, not all at once but buying in gradually month by month while the economy is in panic. That way I don’t gamble on any particular moment being the bottom, I just gamble that the economy will not be fucked forever. If it is we have bigger problems.
Sell high, buy low, basically. Except I’m not wealthy enough for the “sell high” part.
Participating in any of it feels dirty, but I’m not in a position to buy myself a house so I guess I have to do something with my savings.
I guess they like markdown precisely because you can open it in Notepad on a Windows 98 or whatever, read and edit to your hearts desire, and then save it and be on your way. Maybe they find that presenting it as something a little more user friendly runs the risk of at some point running into conflict with that level of portability.
It’s hard to understand the things people around here feel strongly about. I would certainly enjoy being able to send a markdown file to my colleagues instead of having to convert whatever note I’m taking into docx so that they can understand what a headline is. Even odt is not a real option as they’ll introduce track changes or whatever in word and I won’t be able to see the same document they sent me.

At some point my sister had to write a letter of motivation for a job application - a headline and some text, that’s all - and she mentioned to me in passing how much money she would have to pay for a Microsoft Word license in order to produce this document.
Obviously I showed her a free alternative, but the fact remain that normal people have absolutely no idea how to use computers. Just being able to open a Markdown file and see the same level of formatting as what we casually drop in this comment section would be groundbreaking for them. Being able to edit it could potentially save them heaps of money.
I suspect this explains why Markdown doesn’t work intuitively on most operative systems. There’s no money to be made from this degree of user control. Monetizing Markdown is hard as fuck.

I’m impressed you had any left. But indeed, it’s even more bleak than I imagined.
Yeah, it’s a little frustrating that “experiments” like this always use the LLM server as the baseline, giving non-technically minded readers the impression that it has some sort of concept of self-preservation. The blog post shows that these things have no fucking intelligence, but does it in a way where the AI psychosis crowd can still read it and go “oooh, the model will kill us all to save itself!!”. No it fucking won’t, it just outputs random shit because it is fundamentally not intelligent. It’ll only kill us all if some idiot uses it as a baseline for making his decision whether to kill us all.

They’re currently marketing haggling bots to both sellers and buyers for auction sites, so that two bots owned by the same company can argue each other back and forth trying to squeeze the price down. Truly brilliant.
To be fair, I trust the average person more than I trust the people currently building data centres.
