  • That unlocked a memory for me. A buddy of mine had started smoking those and i also remember it being an excessively-long smoke. I bummed one from him and it must have been like 10-15 mins lol. I think i actually reached my destination before i finished the smoke.

That said – glad i finally quit!

  • But i thought they were creating jobs for us? That’s their whole argument! They won’t try to justify the noise, the expense, the pollution, the water consumption, the massive amounts of electricity they consume–none of it

The one thing they love to trot out is the jobs it will bring to the (soon to be industrially terrorized) community… Also without mention that the majority of those jobs are only going to exist during the construction phase. Once that’s done, there will be 1 employee per 50 acres of data center or some shit

  • But how else am i going to operate them? In-person?

I personally have found it most convenient to put my detergent and clothes in the machine, then drive out to a spot where i can get some free wi-fi. Perhaps the Starbucks in the next town over. So, 15-min drive to Starbucks (and grab a PSL since 'tis the season) and then log onto their free wi-fi, then log into my account on Whirlpool’s app on my phone. Click on My Washer, select a cycle, water temperature, rinse options, etc. and press Start Cycle. By the time i get back home, the washer is almost done. I wait around an extra 10 mins or so for the cycle to finish once I’m back home, move the washed clothes into the dryer, and I’m back on the road! I’ve opted to start using the public library as my secondary wi-fi spot (when they’re open, at least), so another 15-min drive and I’m back on the app ready to commence a drying cycle! A few choice button pushes (the app really is streamlined) and my dryer is tumbling and heating like it’s nobody’s business.

  • I’ve struggled to understand the value of this product. I know everyone has to do stuff they don’t exactly enjoy doing but how is putting this thing in charge supposed to make life that much easier? One small excerpt that indicates possible uses:

To allow it to perform tasks that require a computer, like booking flights or shopping for groceries

I’m not risking a problem with a flight of all things due to laziness leading me to put a bot in charge. Ridiculous. Grocery shopping? How much time is putting that thing in charge going to save me? If i ordered grocery store delivery all it’s going to do is take my shopping list and hopefully relay that info to the grocery stores site and schedule delivery and pay for it with my bank account. How much time is it saving me by automating it? A min or 2? I’m ok with ordering my groceries myself, most of the info will already be sitting there on my shopping list… going the “last mile” of ordering the stuff (as the bot could do) would be helpful i guess, but not revolutionary and ultimately something else i would simply rather handle myself. Why risk a problem just to potentially save a min or 2? And for what cost, at that?

The people that need a personal assistant can pony up the $ to pay one. I don’t see this being an effective stand-in for one, but maybe I’m wrong. To me, this is perhaps the most egregious example of a “solution in search of a problem” because I’m still not having that moment of clarity where it’s like “Ooooooh, that’s why there’s so much hype surrounding this tech”
