  • Exactly. If Democrats had taken more than 2/3rds of the house and senate opening up the possibility to ignore vetos and actually get a conviction on impeachment, then it would have been a sweep. This was definitely a Democrat victory as they got a majority of both chambers of congress, but it was not an overwhelming victory. It’s a sign that there’s some hope left, but there is still a lot that can go wrong and there’s a ton that’s going to be need to be done over the next couple years and it will still be an uphill battle the whole way.

  • While it would be hilarious to watch the conservatives tie themselves into knots trying to figure out a way to make it illegal for Obama to do that while also making it fine for Trump that would ultimately be a very bad thing.

First it would add legitimacy to Trumps run, not that a lack of that would stop him, but why hand him free ammunition.

Second it would massively energize the Republican base, because while some may be tired of Trump, they absolutely loath Obama and would vote in large numbers for Trump just to deny Obama any possible chance of winning.

Third, Obama burned a lot of bridges during his two terms and is very much a figure head of the old guard Democrats that are just now losing their grip on the DNC to the actual progressives in the party. Bringing Obama back would be a blow to the progressive wing of the party that we most desperately need in power. Further a lot of Democrat voters soured somewhat on Obama, particularly in his second term, I’m not convinced having him on a ballot would bring more Democrats to the polls than the Republicans it almost certainly would.

  • Article linked elsewhere seems to indicate it didn’t go to German users because the German QA team found the issue before it was sent, but due to an internal communication breakdown the issue didn’t make it back to the international team before the emails had already been sent. GOG immediately apologized for the mistake and changed their internal processes to catch these types of mistakes sooner.

It very much reads like an honest mistake, and even then it only impacted a subset of GOG users because it’s entirely dependent on the font used to render the email subject. The actual Unicode character used was a curved S (a letter from the Greek character set), but certain fonts render it looking more like the infamous SS symbol.

  • I’ve been a professional programmer for over 30 years with some of the biggest companies in the world. I’ve worked with assembly, c, c++, c#, java, kotlin, perl, lua, haskell, rust, javascript, typescript, coffeescrpit, dart, php, python, and I’m sure 3 or 4 other languages I’ve just forgotten about at this point. Some of those languages are terrible and I hope never to touch again, others were great and I’d be happy to work with.

PHP should have been retired as a language 20 yeara ago, but WordPress has kept it alive all this time. The rest of the industry has moved on and learned lessons from what came before, but the sheer momentum of hundreds of thousands of WordPress installs has somehow kept PHP alive. The language started as a hack, and it remains a hack. It’s gotten faster over the years, but it’s still just as badly designed today as it was when it was originally created.

  • There’s broad support for stopping predatory behavior by corporations that are targetting kids (and adults, but mostly kids). This is mostly the same stuff people have been complaining about for a decade or so at this point. Loot boxes, gacha mechanics, ad infested (and therefore stuffed with spyware for “marketing”), complicated multilayered digital currencies, battle passes, daily login rewards, etc. Basically all the well known dark patterns.

However rather than addressing the bad behavior directly, politicians either through malice or incompetence (likely at the behest of corporate lobbyists) keep putting forth these ID laws that just make things worse instead of actually solving the problem people have been complaining about.
