I guess you can argue that say a convicted criminal deserves to suffer their sentence. In that case they should be made to suffer their sentence, no more, no less. If they due to some circumstances suffer more then they should be helped.

The D and R positions are a reflection of the average opinion of people who bother to vote.
I don’t live in the US but If only I and the people I hang out with voted the local political landscape would be the the complete opposite of what the actual election results are. I suspect you have some kind of similar situation going on.
