This election will determine control of Congress. Rep. Pete Aguilar, who represents California’s 33rd Congressional District, shares how Democratic Party leaders are feeling as results come in.
…
CHANG: Well, let me just ask you, Congressman Aguilar, are there serious plans if you retake the House as Democrats to try to impeach President Trump again?
AGUILAR: No. We are focused on delivering on the affordability agenda. Now, that doesn’t mean that we are opposed to accountability and oversight. This administration needs that clearly. They are reckless and irresponsible at just about every level, including the most, you know, corrupt and inept Cabinet ever assembled. But I think we can start there. Keep in mind, it was a Republican who filed articles of impeachment on Pete Hegseth, and Speaker Johnson, who you just talked…
CHANG: Right.
AGUILAR: …Who you just played there, actually sent us home, sent us back to our districts in September to avoid that vote because it was going to be bipartisan.
CHANG: Well, when it comes to…
AGUILAR: We believe (ph) strongly in accountability, and that’s what we plan to do.
CHANG: In the last minute and a half we have left - when it comes to oversight and accountability, if Democrats were in charge of the House, do you expect to be investigating the Trump administration, and if so, what will you be looking into first?
AGUILAR: There will be a host of investigations, and Jamie Raskin with the Judiciary Committee and Robert Garcia with House Oversight will take leadership roles on those issues. And there is plenty to investigate, but I’ll tell you what the American public wants us to investigate are the grift and the corruption, the self-dealing, the no-bid contracts, all of those things that are stealing taxpayers’ money that otherwise could be going to deliver on the priorities that they care about, you know, delivering on healthcare.
If they’re smart, they’ll concentrate on affordability. It’s the only reason they’re there.
Affordability can’t happen without accountability. Besides being a massive affront to human rights, all the money we’re throwing at ICE garbage is money not going into healthcare childcare etc. social infrastructure that makes affordability happen.
And besides all of that, the Republican party is no less of an existential threat today than they were yesterday. So long as they have their freedom and access to their financial networks they are going to continue to sabotage everything in this country. They must be tried and imprisoned or we will fall back into fascist bullshit again in a few years and it will be even worse than it is now.

I’m retired now. But if California ever flips red, my state pension is toast.

My wife and I are the millionaires next door, who live so far below our means that nobody knows. Even then, we’re not the very rich. The billionaires pop a collective boner at the thought of draining people like us.
The rate the US is going is turning blue.
Impeachment is a waste of time. They already did it twice.
They need to go after Musk to set the tone.
They can do lots of things. Holding trump a lame duck and taking back the power of the purse could be a good option to stop 2 more years of this abuse. Build the case for after Jan 20. 2029. But yeah, Musk, Miller, kegseth. Then maybe strike a nerve by going after foreign agen kushner and his grifting kids. Can believe I forgot about removing blanch.
They did it when they knew it was a waste of time. They only did it when the fascists controlled the Senate so there was no chance of him being removed.
Now that the Dems control both, a full impeachment would force him out of office. Which is why they won’t do it. They just wanted the political theater, not actual accountability.
I think they still need like 67 votes to impeach. Still a long way from the 51 majority that I think we can do easily, for everything else.
If they get the last two uncalled races it brings them to 56, with the political environment they may get their four for Trump but then we get JD.
I’d rather they just continue to investigate to lay the foundation for criminal charges, while impeaching his cabinet.
They need 2/3 of the Senate. 56 is 2/3 if just 16 Republican senators are imprisoned or otherwise forced to resign.
With a majority in congress and the senate, they will of course push to impeach Trump. But whether or not that effort succeeds depends on if they can get some republicans in the senate to vote in favor of impeaching him. They need 67 senate votes to succeed.
Considering how unpopular Trump is right now, and that it’s the last two years of his last term in office, some of the republican senators might realize if they cooperate with the effort they might have an easier time in office for the next 10 years. I think the next president will be democrat and they will likely be in office two terms. The GOP won’t have a chance for a comeback until 2036. Do they want to have a target on their back for the next 10 years, or do they cooperate and turn over the idiot that just torpedoed their whole party in order to achieve political survival for themselves?
Every senator is a veteran politician who climbed up the ranks and knows how to play the game. I don’t think they are going to sacrifice themselves to protect Trump. If stabbing him in the back ensures they stay in office as part of a tolerated, minority party then they will probably stab him good.
Honestly he deserves it.
They’re going to prioritize arming Israel and Ukraine, pushing us into WWIII, and blocking Medicare For All.
