At least they have a no-ai tag
That’s my favorite checkbox to use when I make a game with AI.
A helpful browser extension that generates a pop up on screen when it sees the AI declaration on the page so you know the moment you hit the page.
There is also one for Steam.
It’d be nice if itch.io could filter out graphic novels, which is like 99 percent of everything when I search for categories
Problem is itch has a very low max disk size requirement. They wont host games over 2gigs. That basically leaves you with graphic novels and 2d games.
maybe 2d games is what I am interested in
For sure! But as an indie dev building a 3d arena game (an action rts) we so badly wanted to publish on itch but cant. Its a great platform for certain genres was my point.
GameCube games were less than that.
As an indie dev let me just say wed rather not limit our game to GameCube graphics. No offense to that special era and esthetic
Still can do 3d it means. There are people doing pixel art so it shows there are people that want to do older game graphics but Yooka and Laylee had an N64 mode. There’s the following game

And then you have Minecraft + all those games like it.
You are still asking us to signicantly downscale our design goals to accommodate itch. We are releasing our game free on steam anyway. So its not like we are hurting our community by choosing steam. But yes tonnes of games fit within itch platform and that’s awesome. Just not all game designs.
I wasn’t asking you to change anything. Just saying that 2gb doesn’t exclude 3d.
No for sure. But itch asks us to limit ourselves. Others here saying hey lots of reasons to stick with itch and to every comment I agree 100%. But we made a decision for a vision and itch’s model limited us.
Steam and itchio are not curated (or only minimal). So naturally those places will also attract junk. The tradeoff is the free and open market without any organization telling what is allowed and what not (at least for the most part). Similar to Apple vs Google store, I prefer the Google store with more freedom over Apple. The price is more junk, but I want to decide.
At least two of those are preliminary Doom ports to the NES. There’s a third one that’s only on Github.
It’s almost like the chatbot that codes has made arbitrarily complex goals massively easier. Will that produce many low-effort or half-finished projects? Sure… but so did Unity. Ninety percent of everything is crap. You have to focus on the exceptions, or you’ll drown in it.
I think that’s the right way to see it. Somewhere there’s a ten year old kid making 6-7 brain rot games, and when that creativity matures everybody’s gonna piss their pants at the new genius. It’s well worth it to endure the initial wave of slop.
It reminds me of when the Kindle became popular and the market was inundated with shit 99c novels. How many great authors of today self published their bad first effort at the time?
Because the world is broke.
