I have an Outback from before this stupid Ford-ish redesign, and sometimes I am just in the parking lot like, “Damn, I made the right choice in automobile.”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some weird flexes that people are proud of, but shouldn't be?English
51·19 hours agoOn a related note, as a parent I think school perfect attendance awards are perverse. Congratulations, we’re rewarding a kid for being a disease vector and being sent to school miserable and snotty, or at best making other kids feel less-than because they received proper treatment and isolation. I would guess that the average perfect attendance kids costs the rest of the school at least half a dozen absences per year.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How much would it cost the next president/tax payers to tear down the ball room and restore it back to normal? How long would it take? And fixing the rose garden?English
2·19 hours agoIf I’m the Democrats, I try to figure out a way to get something of value to the American people in exchange for letting him fuck off to play with his toys for the next two years. Whatever it is would be cheaply bought, especially if it distracts him from doing anything of actual importance, which by this point we know will be stupid and bad.

8·20 hours agoBut I think the whole notion is poisoned for a good while.
Yeah, nobody’s going to want to throw good money after bad to tear it down again. Maybe at some point after Trump dies and therefore can’t gloat, it’ll actually get used for state dinners and such. In the meantime, I personally think you’ll see the space partitioned into cube farms and temporary offices, and in particular you’ll see the First Lady (or Gentleman) and staff plopped back down over there.
You must not have been getting the ads. No atheists here. We’re all Sharia Muslims now, but also post-op trans, a group famously embraced by fundamentalist Islam.
I think there’s also a bit of “new kid at school” energy, plus part of me even now doubts that we’re more than a purple state.

Do we get the mandatory pediatric bottom surgeries at the Sharia mosque, or just file the paperwork there?

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•I see your powdered milk and raise you powdered toastEnglish
0·9 days agoI always assumed it was some fantastical product that operated like powdered milk, but reconstituted into toast. I never watched that much R&S though. I found the grotesque style (in both the classical and everyday senses) to be offputting. I was still watching cartoons in Junior High – hell, I still watch good ones now – but I was more a Tiny Toon Adventures/Animaniacs guy.

Technology@lemmy.world•Some iPhone Duo screens are already failingEnglish
2·11 days agoI don’t know if they’ll ever be perfect, as it’s just a serious materials science issue to make something fold that should never show a seam, but I’d be willing to tolerate a little crease if they didn’t charge an arm and a leg and made them “reliable but eventually with a small crease.” Seems we are not there yet, but I thank the early adopters for their service.

Technology@lemmy.world•Some iPhone Duo screens are already failingEnglish
2·11 days agoTrue, but one might have hoped they were doing both in parallel. If no one can improve the hardware, these are going to go the way of 3D TVs, though due to reliability rather than annoyance and nausea.

Technology@lemmy.world•Some iPhone Duo screens are already failingEnglish
21·11 days agoI’ll join the chorus. If the price-point were right and the tech were reliable, I’d happily trade a good amount of thickness in order to have the option of an iPad Mini or an iPhone, but in the footprint of the latter when not in use. I really prefer to carry my phone in my front pocket and not to EDC a bag.
It’s just that the price-point is wrong and the tech is not reliable.

Technology@lemmy.world•Some iPhone Duo screens are already failingEnglish
71·11 days agoThe article says that the best guess is there’s a physical part of the hinge about there that must be perfectly aligned, and if it isn’t then that specific screen is eventually doomed.

Technology@lemmy.world•Dada Center companies want to own your local police as well.English
111·16 days agoDada Center, LOL.
Anyway, on the one hand, fuck 'em. On the other, extracting community value from any industry is the only way it can possibly work, and data centers don’t provide long-term employment in any reasonable number, so it needs to be taxes and other more direct aid.
The local residents and their governments “just” (that word’s doing a lot of heavy lifting, I know) need to hold them over a barrel until they get enough to truly make it worthwhile. Making the tech industry pay their fair share would also suppress the number of datacenters down to what actually matches the realistic demand estimates. What we’re seeing right now is undercapitalized bullshit trying to externalize the costs and retain the profits.
Easy to say, hard to do so, so I guess what it comes down to is this: fuck 'em.

Honest question, is a current model CrossTrek much smaller than the older Outbacks?
Unfortunately, the trend seems to be in the other direction. Outbacks are getting a little bigger and a lot blockier. You can see the shared DNA with my car’s generation, but it’s just a little bit worse wherever you look (except inside, apparently) and really looks like a cheap Ford SUV. I think the Toyota collab EV is their only true wagon left, at least aesthetically.
