About the same I would say. I like the smaller site, it being a bit more popular would hurt though.
I just do not like that its mostly images/links being shared and not discussions happening. I guess it is only natural since its a reddit clone, I guess I wish it would be more forum like.
Also welcome back deathbybigsad :) I thought I recognized that profile.
The fact that Mbin doesn’t even get a mention in this question tells me a lot. T_T
Anyway, the overall activity level seems to have dropped off a bit since the initial burst during the Reddit API debacle. Activity seems to be clustered around a handful of large instances. Within that though it’s solid and steady.
It doesn’t have any .world or .ml clones that I’ve seen, so it’s pretty good!
I’ve been on the Fediverse since the 3rd party API debacle. I’ve had several accounts on several instances. In my opinion, it seems less popular today, but I’ve also added instances to my block list, so it’s entirely possible the Fediverse is growing, just in those instances.
In terms of how it is in general, if you ask me, every online community is an echo chamber nowadays. Reddit is bot and clanker slop flavor. Lemmygrad and .ml are tankie flavor. X is nazi flavor. Truth Social is MAGA flavor. TikTok is genZ normie flavor. Dbzero is libertarian flavor. Piefed and lemmy.world are the liberal and progressive hugfest flavor. As accepting as they claim to be though, the truth is, some ideas simply aren’t tolerated.
For example, the suggestion that gun violence in the US is perhaps best treated as a violence problem, best addressed with social programs that address the root causes of violence: poverty, homelessness, unemployment, drug addiction, and mental health, is wildly unpopular. In fact, any suggestion of a solution to gun violence in the US that doesn’t involve a repeal of the second amendment and a total ban on all non-police ownership of firearms is unwelcome, and invites many rude assumptions about the poster’s character, habits, and identity. Any suggestion that such a solution would only strengthen the police state is met with similar reactions.
It’s still more tolerable than those other places though.
Piefed and lemmy.world are the liberal and progressive hugfest flavor.
moth supposes you’re one of those people who thinks anyone left of margaret thatcher is a progressive.
It’s like an ‘old school forum yet to be discovered kinda thing’ for me. I like it
I’ve been here for 10 months, and from what I can tell (who knows if my perception is correct), the Fediverse and Lemmy are gaining popularity (or maybe I’m just slowly learning how to use them properly… that’s also possible xD). Here’s how I came to that conclusion: When I first joined, popular posts on world would get a few hundred upvotes. Now, they often get more than a thousand. It’s not a massive surge, but if we assume these are the posts that get the most views, then either interest is growing or the user base is expanding.
If user graphs are to be believed then it is more popular since reddit killed 3rd party apps.
Say, what are the best user graphs these days? It looks like fediverse observer is gone. And fedidb suggests MAUs are stable but not growing:
I have nothing to back this up, only personal experience: It just feels a bit of the same. Though with somewhat more hostile people here and there.
You can have a poke around at !fediverse@lemmy.world but actual stats seem elusive, although I didn’t try hard, in server search is bad (although Kagi now does it, might have better luck there).
I found this about 200K lemmy.world users, and in it was a graph from fedidb.com, which is 3 weeks later ‘server error’, but indicates MAU are much lower, 14.5K a year ago and 12.5k recently. That’s just one (large) server, might mean diaspora which would be good, but seems to indicate stable-ish with slow decline.
I am sanguine, quite like the types that have washed up on this shore, good enough for this person to use.
Are you asking how the popularity of lemmy and piefed combined changes over time, or how the 2 compare vs each other? I see that responses assume the first… and I don’t know the answer to the second.
To me it feels like about the same over time. There is some life in the bigger generic communities but most specialized communities I subscribed to remain dead.
Lemmy is more active link
Lemmy has grown more accounts but monthly active users has slightly dropped.
Piefed used to have a history, but it appears to be gone. Piefed has been slowly dieing due to terrible design decisions by the guy that runs majority of it.
Piefed has made some rocky decisions but the user accounts are trending up, MAU jumps around but is mostly trending up, seems about the same trends as lemmy just a much smaller scale.
The chart for piefed doesn’t show for some reason. I just remember months ago seeing massive drops when Lemmy didn’t. That might have fallen off the date range currently shown.
Also total users doesn’t matter when new accounts are free. Someone can make an account, realize the creator is a man child that bans any criticism, and the total still goes up while that person changes to Lemmy and never used piefed again.
I’m tired of this question asked.
You’ll know it’s big and popular when it is talked about and has thousands flocked to it.
more popular, and more problems that come with popularity. like a continual slide in content quality.
What i notice the most the past year is a huge uptick in ragebait and doombait posting. some larger communities are like 95% nothing but click-farming headlines and users trying to one-up each other in how raging and hateful their comments are.
even a lot of the lighthearted stuff, like memes and showerthoughts, 90% of the posts are just doomerbait.
