I’d like to share this video of a low cost tumbleweed like device that slowly clears landmines
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=99tsY2nsTkE
‘Mine Kafon’ is a “low-cost wind-powered mine detonator with the appearance of a giant, spiky-armed tumbleweed.”
There’s an estimated 110 million mines still buried around the world. The inventor of ‘Mine Kafon’ – a former Afghan refugee – hopes it will inspire others to join the effort to make the world mine-free by 2027.
Also these rats in Cambodia

APOPO (Dutch: Anti-Persoonsmijnen Ontmijnende Product Ontwikkeling1 ) is a registered Belgian non-governmental organisation and US non-profit which trains southern giant pouched rats1 and technical survey dogs to detect landmines and tuberculosis.2 They call their trained animals HeroRATs and HeroDOGs.3

Magawa (November 2013 – January 2022) was a Southern giant pouched rat (Cricetomys ansorgei) that worked as a HeroRAT sniffing out landmines in Cambodia for the non-governmental organization APOPO (in English, Anti-Personnel Landmines Removal Product Development) which trains rats to detect landmines and tuberculosis. Magawa was the most successful landmine-sniffing rat in the organization’s history, and received the PDSA Gold Medal in 2020.
Finally, this map of which counties signed the Ottawa Treaty vs. those who are still contributing to the problem

Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction

Not that like, children and adults getting blown up by land mines isn’t sad enough on its own already, but now I’m thinking about the non-zero amount of wildlife that was just minding its own fucking business before getting blown up by a landmine that was put there by some asshole (to defend against another asshole) :(
I choose to believe this was a dud and the bear is fine!
That looks to be an anti-vehicle mine due to it’s size. It could very well be armed and active.
Anti-personal mine are a quite a bit smaller.
Not helping
So the thing that could kill him before is now confirmed to certainly kill him. 🥺
I need hope. Can someone else chime in with a lie, like that’s a confetti capsule and he’s going to have a fun party.
It takes a fair bit of pressure to set off an anti tank mine. If that’s a grizzly though, even just a brown bear, it definitely has the capacity to do so. That being said, depending on why it picked it up will be the deciding factor here. If it grabbed it thinking it’s food… yeah the bear was sadly not long for this world.
But there’s a chance! That’s something, right?
😭😭😭😭
It’s actually a long lost prototype of the Energy Dome. Most prominently worn by the American New Wave band Devo. They formed in 1973 and are best know for their hit song, “Whip It”. The Energy Dome didn’t make an appearance until 1980, during their “Freedom of Choice” campaign.
Yay! He’s gonna be just fine.
would it help if I said that’s a Russian bear and Ukrainian mine?
edit: touchy crowd. it’s a joke folks.
Bears are bears. They do bear things. They don’t know borders, don’t support wars. They just want to bear.
I remember a story a friend of mine from Serbia told me about land mines still being found in the woods. He said they would still go off every once in a while if a deer stood on them, and you find remnants of deer in the bushes and trees. Also, when it got really cold, the ground would shrink and sometimes they’d go off then as well.
We have a few mine fields left in Germany as well, with mines we buried ourselves.
You see, back then it was thought to be a grand idea to make them out of glass so they can’t be found with metal detectors.
Well, as it turns out, you can indeed not find them with metal detectors. Fuck.
