Not me, but I just discovered that my spouse is inept at closing doors
You gotta elaborate on this, lol
Nobody told me you were supposed to scrape/scrub your tongue when brushing your teeth… and nobody told me about washcloths either. 🫣 My wife put me on to that about a decade ago (so, in my early twenties) so by now it’s just part of my life but yeah…
AFAIK most people don’t do anything to their tongue. But I’m open to being told otherwise by others here.
It changes things! Sometimes the mouth area is still a bit funky and it’s not the teeth you’ve just brushed but the unclean tongue that’s the issue.
If I brush my teeth then I’m brushing my tongue and the roof of my mouth too. A few times a year I’ll use a tongue scraper but it’s probably too much.
I learned that you should roll up a period pad and use the wrapper of the new pad to hold it rolled closed. They have a little tape and it reduces mess and smell.
In my defense, I didn’t use pads until last year.
Walking in general. Physical therapy both sucks super hard and is vastly improving my life. I’ve had a decades long back injury caused by a dog attack, but I’ve apparently been walking in a way that guards a wound not entirely there.
Thank you PT.
FUCK you PT.
Turns out the pedal in the middle slows down the car and you don’t need to just swerve around things all the time.
Not too long ago I learned that you’re not supposed to rinse your mouth out after brushing your teeth, but instead just spit out the toothpaste. Apparently you’re supposed to leave a coating of it on your teeth for it to work properly.
My dental hygienist recently said that if you vomit you’re not supposed to brush your teeth right away. You’re supposed to rinse your mouth out with water to balance the pH levels and after a little while then you can brush.
Still plenty of toothpastes without fluoride.
Where did you learn this? I’ve never heard this recommendation before and it sounds pretty out there.
Edit: it turns out that apparently both the American Dental Association and the National Health Service of the UK recommend not rinsing immediately after brushing. Huh, TIL.
I noticed a big decrease in plaque after I stopped rinsing.
That would be a great result that I look forward to.
I heard it straight from my Dentist (in Canada) just this last month. I was also blown away, been rinsing for decades…
Same here. I’m glad your dentist told you though.
I’m not them, but I first heard this in one of the early episodes of A Problem Squared podcast. Edutainment, baby!
The flouride in toothpaste doesn’t work if you rinse it off immediately. You should not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after brushing.
Got it, thanks, I’ve updated my comment.
It makes sense if you think about it. The flouride needs to rest on your teeth to harden them properly.
I’ve updated my comment. I wouldn’t have intuitively thought about this because why would I think that it would take time for Fluoride to take effect, or that whatever is left after rinsing wouldn’t do the job? Thanks.
Toothpaste instructions often tell you to rinse with a small amount of water, but dentists here always say not to.
And floss before brushing, so you can rinse goop out before the toothpaste goes in.
I have the same logic about flossing personally, but I’ve asked my dentist/dental hygenist multiple times and they’ve all said the order for flossing doesn’t matter.
it’s more about practicalilty. when in flossing, stuff might get loosened but still be partially stuck in my wire, or just stick to be back of my teeth
if I floss first, I can just go straight to brushing and not have to get that little piece unstuck separately
this really helps to optimize my time efficiency in my life, allowing me precious more seconds to doomscroll
My dentist has also said the order doesn’t matter. My guess is that the benefits of flossing at all outweigh any small benefits from doing it in a specific order. I’m also assuming most dentists are just happy if you floss and don’t want to nitpick on technique unless it’s causing issues.
I’m flabbergasted
I wouldn’t trust healthcare advice from a random Lemmy user. Also given that an overdose of fluoride damages your bones.
Edit: Since the downvotes indicate disbelief, check for example Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluoride_toxicity
The message should not be that more fluoride is always better. You will probably not damage yourself by soaking your teeth in toothpaste for an hour every day, but what do I know? At some point there is a limit.
The fluoride concentration in toothpaste is not high enough to cause toxicity if not rinsed out. Don’t eat mouthfuls of it, but the small amount left after brushing is beneficial for enamel. Ask literally any qualified dentist. Literally a couple weeks back, my dentist suggested that I can put a little dab on a tender spot of my tooth after brushing before going to sleep to target it.
You have been misinformed about fluoride in toothpaste and water. Please take the time to inform yourself and trust in facts, not propaganda.
Not meaning any disrespect or negativity towards you, just a heads up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluoride_toxicity
Also, my fluoride jelly says to use it once a week at most and never more than 5 minutes in one go. I wonder why.
Maybe because it is far more concentrated than the fluoride in toothpaste or water.
You know, like the difference in alcohol between a 4% alcohol beer and 95% alcohol Everclear
Are you imagining that toothpaste and municipal water supplies contain hydrofluoric acid? That’s like saying hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, contains water, H2O.
And what the hell is fluoride jelly and why do you need it?
Fluoride jelly is the stuff the dentist puts on your teeth. You can buy similar stuff from the pharmacy. I don’t know what the exact name is in English.
Read the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article. I’m not gonna explain it to you, unless you didn’t have any chemistry in high school.
Edit: actually, Wikipedia has better articles about this. Read the “overdose” section in this one instead. It’s pretty clear I believe.
I think you need to retake chemistry then, right now you’re the one spreading misinformation. The Wikipedia article is about a completely unrelated compound.
Maybe this one is more helpful: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluoride_toxicity?wprov=sfla1
Anyways, don’t trust random medical advice on Lemmy.
this is nonsense.
you’re not suppose to eat/drink after brushing, esp anything acidic.
because you want the fluoride in the toothpaste to stay on your teeth. and it’s like 10-15m.
you are suppose to rinse your mouth. just like you rinse the flouride treatment at the dentist.
After a a treatment at the dentist you spit, not rinse.
you need to rinse to spit.
How long does the treatment sit on your teeth before rinsing?
flouride treatment? it was like 10-15m. then they took out the trays and you rinsed your mouth out. and they told you to not eat anything for 20m so the flouride had more time to absorb, because any friction on your teeth would scrap it off.
toothpaste also has fluoride and the idea is the same.
So you’re saying it sat on your teeth for 15 minutes prior to rinsing?
yes, that’s how ever flouride treatment I ever had worked… because your in a dentists office.
toothpaste isn’t a flouride treatment. it’s toothpaste.
My dentist has never asked me to rinse my mouth with water after the flouride mouthwash (or the trays back in the day)
cool, mine tells me to rinse my mouth after everything. every visit i rinse my mouth like six times.
You may want to find out why.

There are studies from 40 years ago saying it’s a bad idea.
I’ve been apparently wearing my belt upside down because I put the latch on the right and the cover on the left. Only noticed the other day that the logo on the cover was upside down. I’m not flipping it the other way tho. It’s too awkward to do and undo that way.
I know trouser buttons are flipped left-rightfor men and women. Is it the same for belts?
Usually belts for men don’t have anything on them indicate a “proper” direction, you would just wear them whatever is comfortable, and if you have a buckle, that goes on over the latching part.
I have a Groove Life belt, tho. It’s got a special latch with a built in buckle; the buckle is printed so that it should be on the right so it’s readable (it’s just a “GL” logo) but I find it easier to have the underside on the right with the buckle part on the left.
For years I kept dating and being in relationships and putting a lot of effort into it. Also socializing and making friends too.
I gave up about 5 years ago and I’m much much happier with my life. It’s amazing how much better I feel on a daily basis when my energy and efforts aren’t going into a black hole from which no joy comes out. I also rapidly achieved a lot of life goals after 10+ years of achieving almost none of them.
Being mostly totally alone is completely awesome and I’m annoyed that other people convinced me it was terrible and awful.
I’m actually moving in the opposite direction. I was (still am really) a massive introvert, then I got really, really, really sick and realized I have zero support if something happens where I can’t take care of myself. I realized at the end of the day humans are a social species and we need some level of human connection to thrive.
Speak for yourself. When I’ve been sick my gf/family told me to go f myself and what an asshole I am for getting sick. Literally nobody is ever going to take care of me, and never has. When my dad was dying, my 5 year old girlfriend didn’t help, she broke up with me for ‘being a loser who is sad about his stupid dad’. Oh and then called me up asking me for money after we broke up. Most of my gfs/friends actively tried to sabotage the progress in my life and would argue against me doing the things that improved my life. Working out, not drinking, eating right, saving, investing, were all labeled ‘gay, stupid, weird, queer’.
At the end of my days, people add very little to my life, and having them in my life results in a net negative. Which is precisely why excluding them in my life has lead to massive gains in my health, happiness, and wealth. I can work out, eat right, and pursue my passions and grow my career skills without repeatedly being told how awful and shitty doing those things are, and what I should be doing with my life is sitting on my ass drinking booze, eating fast food, and watching shitty sitcoms every night.
You can lecture me all you want, but I’ve never had anyone in my life really add anything of value or given me any genuine support and the second I ask for help they tell me what a piece of shit I am and then start asking me for help. Anytime I called anyone up to try and share good news, like getting a $35,000 raise, buying a home, or adopting my pets, I was told how shitty I was and then asked for money by so called ‘friend’ or family member or other person who supposedly ‘cares’ about me and lecturing me what an asshole I am because they ‘deserve’ my money more than I do and I shouldn’t be able to have a home, or pets, or a car, or a great job.
Which is to say, without all that horrid negatively dragging me down from my supposed ‘support structure’ I am finally able to be happy and enjoy my life without being shamed, harassed, or threatened. I’m also allowed to be proud of my achievements in life, rather than being repeatedly told how horrible and undeserving I am for having achieved them.
my 5 year old girlfriend didn’t help
Phrasing my bro, phrasing.
Those are some shitty friends and family.
I’m glad that you were able to achieve so much for yourself by focusing on yourself, many people never get to learn that lesson. Never forget that.
When you heal everything your formers have done to you, then you get to learn to find people that don’t want to drag you down. It’s hard; when we grow damaged and broken, we become a lighthouse for people looking for someone to take advantage. However, it’s possible to change the lightbulb, we just have to heal first.
No. I don’t need to heal. I’m healed.
I know I’m healed because instead of listening to people lecture me how damaged I am, I ignore them. Because that is what everyone in my life used to do, lecture me how damaged I am for not being like them and how ‘concerned’ they are for me. It’s manipulation to setup a power dynamic where they are ‘normal’ and you are ‘faulty’ so later on they can convince you to do what they want.
Just like the lady last winter I tried to date who lectured me I am mentally ill and need therapy if I am happy driving a basic car, because a ‘well-adjusted person has ambition and self respect and would want to drive a $100,000 car.’ She drove a $70K car. She genuinely thought I was mentally ill. I genuinely thought she was a stupid idiot and I lost all respect/desire for her when she voiced her ‘concern’ for me.
I’d love to meet someone someday who thinks it’s OK to be happy with driving a basic car, but I have literally never met such a person in my life. They might exist out there somewhere but I have never met them. Most folks I meet, sadly, just want to lecture me on how I need to have a more expensive one or how ‘disappointed’ they in me for driving such a ‘cheap car’ and how I have ‘no self respect’ if I do so. They also tell me how I have ‘no self respect’ because I don’t own $5,000 suit and shit like that.
Weird how that works.
Sorry Askew, I misunderstood you. I’m glad to hear you’re healed.
The people in your story sound really superficial. I hope someday you find people that value and see things like you do. :-)
This is the most unhinged and egocentric take I’ve seen on here in quite a while, congrats.
“If you meet an asshole on the way to work in the morning, you met an asshole. If everyone you meet all day is an asshole…”
I don’t know about “wrong”, but I recently found out people think it’s weird that I attempt all the across clues in a crossword in order, and then all the down clues? Evidently most people jump around and make use of the extra letters they’ve been getting?
It never even occurred to me to not just do all the clues in order. 😬
Okay, so, according to my calculations… Yes. You are certifiably insane.
What if you just don’t know the answer to one? Or if multiple answers fit, and you need letters to choose between them?
I usually go through in order until I get stuck and then switch directions to use the free letters.
It depends on the medium I’m using. If it’s a book or newspaper, I’ll jump around. If I’m using my phone it makes more sense to do all the across, then all down.
For what its worth I do it the same as you. I feel accomplished when I get it all in one round but that only happens with the easy puzzles at the beginning of the week. I have a goal of completing a puzzle on just the first pass of accross clues without having to use any down clues.
Not actually recent, but a while back I learned that what we call the “bottom” of the banana is actually the top, flowering end. Turns out it’s way easier to open a banana at the flowering/non-stem end. So many years I’d been opening them at the other end, trying to snap off the stem part, mushing up that end of the banana most of the time.
I tried this out a while back and tbh it’s hard to open on the non stem side for me. I will continue to use the stem side as it provides more leverage.
i just give it a little squeeze and it splits in two and it’s the easiest thing to pull apart, way easier than trying to get the stem part to separate unless you have a knife and cut it first…
I just break the outer layer on the inside of the stem base with my thumbnail and the stem lets me peel the first part back like a cartoon character. If I want the whole thing out I peel most of the way down and squeeze the opposite end to pull out the whole thing or eat my way down and use it to pop out the last part without that little seedy nub thing.
No knife needed and the peel keeps my hands clean. Easy peasy.
Mushed banana tastes better anyways.
Can’t deep throat a mashed banana.
Remember that if you think you can or can’t you’re right.
Blech, hard pass for me, I can’t stand that texture.
just found out about email rules, i have been deleting individually for years like a peasant
Cleaning cast iron. I used to add water cold and bring to a boil. Now I heat first until grease is almost smoking, then add a bit of water and let it steam and sputter itself clean.
I have a solid plastic scraper that has never let me down. Doesn’t matter what I cook in it, how much blackened meat gets stuck, or how long I neglect it in the stove top before washing it, I run it under hot water, hit it with the scraper, then the abrasive side of my sponge, then the soft side. After, I towel dry it, put it in the stove top to evaporate left over moisture, then rub a thin layer of oil on it.
🫤 I just wash it out like anything else and put it upside down on the stove to dry.
Depends on how stuck things get. I do a lot of blackening of meat which tends to leave dry cooked bits on the pan which don’t wash out so easy.
When I say “blackening”, I mean with my black spice in light oil. How are you doing it?
I use a ring mail washcloth.
I have one of those too, but I usually don’t need it with the heat and steam method. Most of the stuck-on foodstuff comes off with just a spray from the faucet. No need to even scrub.
Putting my T-shirts in the drawer. Historically, I did this via flat stacking, like pizza boxes. It’s much easier to find a specific T-shirt if you arrange them in the drawer like hanging file folders. Also allows you to pack in more of them.
This was a huge discovery for me as well when reading the Marie Kondo book. I try to store everything in an accessible way now, though some things are easier than others. I gave up on folding my socks though. They just get tossed in a box.
Granny knot. Making the knot the right way helps top never having to re-tie my shoes during the whole day.
The sign of a stable shoe knot is that it is perpendicular to the shoe. A shoe knot angled or parallel is the unstable granny version.
The most simple correction, for anybody else wondering, is simple. Make your first cross the other way and do not change the next main step at all.
Yup, ends up like a square knot with pull strings if you do it right.
This is the way. Your muscle memory is so ingrained it’s really hard to change how you tie the bow (whichever method you use) but it’s easy to reverse that initial knot. With the Present Holidays coming up, it’s good to know for tying ribbon bows on gifts, too
Oh! If anyone is interested in shoelace knots, I’d highly recommend checking out the Ian Knot. There’s a similar need to make sure the knot is balanced to keep it secure, but it’s overall much faster to tie.
Yes, it wasn’t recently, but learning this made a huge difference for me. I actually learned it from a TED talk, lol.
You can learn even more from Ian.
Thanks, that site is awesome. I’m pretty sure that it was the one I used some time ago to learn a few new lacing methods.
Explain?
See my reply parallel to yours for a video of it.
Yup, this was me a few months ago (but my shoes stayed tied…)
