Genuienly don’t mind if I didn’t have to commute + office politics + random inefficiencies + …
(Also her fingers are melting)
Pretty wild turning a Masochism hobby into a job in Electronics Manufacturing.
Everything in this photo hurts to look at.
Oh this would be so funny if a hanged this image around my university’s fab lab.
Right next to the lab safety stuff.
Her hobbies are being a stock photo model and self-inflicted pain.
Checkmate,
atheistsnerds. Why does this board smell like burnt fingers?

for anyone viewing this picture who is thinking of learning how to solder, don’t hold it there, thats the hot part.
If you smell burnt chicken, you’re holding it wrong!
not true when i got it out of the drawer the whole thing was cold
I have very little soldering experience, but every once in a while at work I have to use a soldering iron to install heat-set threaded inserts into 3d prints.
The little machine that controls the soldering iron only has a power button and knob, and no indication that it is heating up or hot or even working. Each time I use it I convince myself that it isn’t on and have to test it. And each time I briefly consider using my hand. It’s always super hot.
It not only gets hot, it rapidly gets hot. At my university, it takes a couple of minutes (2 or 3) to reach the Max temperature of 800°F
Like the other guy said: use water!
To check if it’s hot I always just poke it into the wet sponge to hear the hiss. It’s also a very satisfying noise.
I always poke it into the person sitting next to me to check if it’s hot. Their scream together with their sizzling skin and meat is a very satisfying noise too.
we got a soldering iron with a flashlight in the handle, so when it’s hot it’s bright
Speaking from experience: you do that one time and then never again.
Like never again that week? Or… What’s a normal amount of time for that?
About an hour before you are cleared to try again.
I mean I learned my lesson.
lmao yes
You’re a coward if you still have feeling in your finger tips
You’re a coward if you can still feel emotional pain after plunging that hot iron into a tangled mess of lead solder, inhaling deeply, and drifting off into the sweet, sweet embrace of saturnine bliss.
Is that also how I learn about trickle down economics and pulling on my own bootstraps?
You’ll certainly be drooling, so I guess that counts as trickle down, but I very much doubt you’ll have shoelaces. Velcro straps will be much more suitable for where you’re going, weeeeee :)
You can tell by the charred parts underneath her fingers.
don’t
you lose the love you had for your hobby
I mean I turned my hobby of math and engineering into a major worthwhile pursuing.
I still don’t hate it yet.
i turned my hobby of solving puzzles and board games into a decent career in finance/accounting. i still have trouble playing board games now, it killed it that bad.
I like 3D printing so I’m studying mechanical engineering, the only problem is that the teacher keeps talking about this “Cauculus” thing and I don’t know what it is but sure it doesn’t mater.
/j actually math is quite a beautiful thing ngl.
Once the calluses harden from the burning, then you know you’ve made it as a professional mobo poker.
Putting a soldering iron on a motherboard, using no whick, solder, or fume hood. This is the kind of jobs 90 year old politicians think of when techbros promise high paying tech jobs in their area.
Holding the soldering iron by the hot end is fine, though. That’s how you get a proper Maillard reaction going.
She has on safety glasses, that means nothing bad can happen.
What look like UV protection glasses np less as well, for all the UV light solding produces
I tried to make a joke about shit and everyone is just criticizing her soldering technique. WTF is wrong with y’all
Fuckin’ whooshed over the lot of them.
It’s like the image of the Japanese girls playing a console and nothing’s plugged in, it’s never not going to be the original meme 🤣
This has repost potential you say.
But her fucking hand!!! What do you mean “technique?” She’s MELTING.
dang lemmings and their anticyborg bullshit
Big jobbies, the lot of them.
Dinna fash yersel. I kent fit yi meant. Ah didna quite weet my briogs bit I did snort oot ma naise!
It’s a picture of a woman doing something wrong.
That’s like catnip to lemmites
Oh come on. It could be anyone with that technique.
Turn your hobby
Into a slobbie…
Holding it wrong? Check. No solder? Check. No soldering iron stand? Check. No fume filter? Check. No ESD mat? Check. No third hand or other holder? Check. No way to clean the soldering iron tip? Check.
How hard is it to talk to someone that actually does what you want to show and make sure it’s at least a reasonable depiction? Oh wait people are lazy shits and nobody checks anything.
Right, carry on.
A lot of these are actually good examples of the difference between a hobbiest or a professional. If she just held it correctly and you told me there was a bit of solder somewhere we can’t see, I could very easily believe this was a real photo of a hobbyist.
Most of what you listed are luxuries and conveniences. The one exception is the fume hood, which is a safety concern, but I would say that’s overkill for any hobbyist and maybe even a lot of professionals. A small fan and a reasonably vented/sized room is fine. Heck, I only bother grabbing my fan if I know i’m going to be doing more than ~15 minutes of soldering.
I would say that’s overkill for any hobbyist
yeah, i just do it in the garage with the door open (only better ventilation in the house is out back by the grill) and use lead-free solder. a third hand and a sponge are enough and my hand will never be steady enough to work with a magnifying lens
I have a $15 USB powered soldering iron and it scares me a bit every time I use it. Nothing should be able to get that hot off of a 5V USBA plug.
This was made by incompetent people for incompetent people. And to be fair, I usually don’t have a fume hod or a third hand either. I usuly worn close to an open window on the rare occasions I solder something. I 100% agree wit the rest though.
Are you enjoying your hobbies a little too much? Turn it into a job! Then you’ll never enjoy it again!
